Anyone who has worked a day program through an August afternoon knows how much a room can change a day. When it gets warm, people stop settling. Participation drops off. You spend the back half of the afternoon reading the room instead of running it.

That is the kind of thing that rarely makes it into a grant application. This year it did.

The Roland Center has been awarded $20,000 from Helpers Community, Inc. through their 2026 grant cycle, for air purification equipment, HVAC repairs and efficiency upgrades in our main building, home to our Adult Day Program.

Our building works. That is the point.

To be clear, nothing here is broken. The air is fine and the AC runs. We applied for this grant because we would rather do the work while that is still true.

The usual pattern will be familiar to anyone who looks after a building. A system is working, so it waits. It is working the next year too. Then one July it fails, the emergency repair costs several times what the planned fix would have, and the people sitting in that room are the ones waiting on a part. We would rather not run that play.

Why comfort is part of care

Many of the people in our Adult Day Program are aging. Some live with respiratory conditions. Some are sensitive to heat, to noise, or to any change in a space. A growing number are living with dementia.

For them, a comfortable room is not a nice extra. It shapes whether the day works. Clean air and a steady temperature mean people settle in, stay longer and take part. Without them you get the opposite, and the person affected most is often the one least able to say so.

Why this grant is unusual

Capital needs are among the hardest things in this sector to fund. Funders are drawn to programs, which come with participants, outcomes and photographs. A compressor comes with an invoice.

Helpers Community, Inc. is a nonprofit that makes grants to organizations serving adults with developmental disabilities, with priority given to those in California. What sets them apart is what they pay for: facilities and infrastructure, rather than programs, salaries or operating costs.

Most funders will not go near that. Helpers Community does it deliberately, which tells you they understand that for the people we serve, the room is not separate from the service.

Thank you

Work on our main building begins in the coming months. Stay tuned.

To everyone at Helpers Community, thank you. You funded the thing that is hardest to ask for and easiest to put off, and the people who will feel it are the ones who spend their days here. We are excited to begin a long term partnership with Helpers, working alongside them in our shared mission.
