SG/PRC Leadership Visits Our Campus as Care Levels Rise at SGVRF

On October 15, 2026, Lucina, Deputy Executive Director of San Gabriel/Pomona Regional Center (SG/PRC), and Yvette, a Resource Developer with SG/PRC, visited The Roland Center and San Gabriel Valley Residential Facility (SGVRF) in La Puente. It was a significant day for us. The visit followed most of a year of joint work to increase the level of care at SGVRF, and it gave us the chance to show two of the people behind that work what it looks like on the ground.

The tour

Our team took Lucina and Yvette through the Adult Day Center and our specialized home for seniors. Along the way they visited the Therapeutic Gardens, the Memory Café and met a number of the wonderful individuals whom we serve.

We designed each of these spaces around the people who use them, many of whom are living with dementia as well as an intellectual or developmental disability.

The work behind the visit

SGVRF operates three homes in La Puente that specialize in complex care. Residents have significant support needs, and those needs often grow as people age. Since early 2026, The Roland Center, SGVRF and SG/PRC have worked together to make sure the level of care keeps pace.

What changes, in real terms

For SGVRF residents, the increase in care means:

  • higher staff ratios, with more staff for each resident

  • more staffing hours

  • more specialized consultants informing how care is planned and delivered

  • more resources for health management and quality of life

Staying home while growing older

The added staffing and resources also make it possible for residents to stay in their homes as they age. Without that support, getting older often leads to a move. A resident of an ARF may need to transfer to an RCFE, and a resident of an RCFE may eventually be placed in a nursing home or another institutional setting. Moving is hard on anyone. For a person with dementia and an intellectual or developmental disability, leaving familiar staff, housemates and daily routines can be especially disorienting. With this partnership in place, more of our residents can grow older in the homes they already know.

What are ARFs and RCFEs?
ARF (Adult Residential Facility): A licensed home that provides 24-hour non-medical care and supervision for adults ages 18 to 59 who need support with daily living. Two of SGVRF’s homes are ARFs.
RCFE (Residential Care Facility for the Elderly): A licensed home that provides care, supervision and help with daily activities for adults 60 and older. Both are licensed by the California Department of Social Services. When a resident’s age or care needs go beyond what their home is licensed or staffed to provide, a move to a different setting usually follows.

Our partnership with SG/PRC

California’s regional centers coordinate services and supports for people with developmental disabilities and their families. SG/PRC has been closely involved throughout this process, and the increase in care at SGVRF would not have happened without them.

The Roland Center is a nationally recognized leader in specialized dementia care for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities. Dr. Thomas Buckley, our Co-CEO (Programs and Policy), has led this work on our side. The people we serve deserve the very best care available, and this partnership is helping us provide it.

Thank you

Thank you to Lucina, Yvette and the SG/PRC team for visiting, and for the support behind this work. We look forward to continuing the partnership for the benefit of every individual and family we serve.
